Kubuntu is a variant of Ubuntu based on the K desktop environment (KDE). Of all the true desktop environments, KDE is the most customizable, and really the only downside is you can easily get lost in the maze of configuration options. It's also a little heavier than MATE and XFCE, on par with GNOME.
